GOING GREEN

At SCi we take steps to educate and engage our employees to support the environment through their everyday actions at home, while at work and while traveling. The following is a list of things that employees engage in to protect the environment on a daily basis:

  1. Reduction of water, waste and energy consumption - For example here we can advise our employees to skip bottled water and use a water filter to purify tap water or bring a useable bottled water, use Recycle paper etc.
  2. Recycle Ink Cartridges.
  3. Keep Electronics out of the Trash.
  4. More work , less energy - Set computers to energy-saving settings and make sure to shut them down when you leave for the day ("standby" settings will continue to draw power even when not in use). By plugging hardware into a power strip with an on/off switch (smart power supply), the whole desktop setup can be turned off at once (make sure to power down inkjet printers before killing the power they need to seal their cartridges)

In addition, SCi uses holiday cards which are made out of recycled paper and support a charitable cause. SCi also prefers to purchase marketing materials and objects which are environment friendly, such as the use of recycled paper, lead-free paint and other bio-degradable resources.

CHARITIES SUPPORTED

SCi is proud to support the following non-profit organizations charities:

  • Arlington Pediatric Center (APC). - Organization providing a Medical Home to thousands of children living in poverty in Arlington County.
  • American Red Cross - After the earthquake in Haiti SCi recognized the dire need its people were in and contributed to this cause.
  • Ronald Mcdonald House of Charity - In April 2009, SCi joined their charity walk as well as designated an amount for donation.
  • The Race for Hope - In May 2011, SCi participated in the annual Race for Hope. This is one of the largest fundraisers in the nation to benefit the brain tumor community. Proceeds benefit the National Brain Tumor Society and Accelerate Brain Cancer Cure. SCi was part of the Friends4Michael team.
  • The Spinal Research Foundation - In May 2010, SCi participated in the 5k run / 1 mile walk to support spinal research and health. The SRF is dedicated to the improvement of spinal health care through research and education.
  • SPIRIT Open Equestrian Program Inc. is a nationally recognized, 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that provides therapeutic, equestrian-related activities to children and adults of all abilities.

SCi employees are also involved in making a difference by suggesting charities themselves. After verifying the legitimacy of the charities SCi allocates a designated amount to that charity of employee's choosing. In 2009 employees recommended the Boys & Girls Club of America.
